Brandon Lewis - Blog

Brandon Lewis Parliamentary Candidate for Great Yarmouth: News

Our History

There are so many great things to do in and around Great Yarmouth and Norfolk too more generally. We often forget them purely because they are in front of us day in and day out.

If you are reading this and visit or live in Great Yarmouth and have not visited the Burgh Castle, go. It is steeped in history. I cannot do full justice to it here but it is noted in the work of the know almost celebrity status historian: David Starkey. In his book on Monarchy, following the TV series of the same name, he refers to the walls built in and around Norfolk and England (as it was then). He mentions Burgh Castle and the size of it walls, their thickness and robust ness, which is clear today from the fact that it is still there to be seen all of these hundreds of years later.

The day today for me started with a run, but only 40 minutes (i really have got to build back up to the 3 hr run next week. I may even just go for it and do a half marathon next weekend). I will make up for it tomorrow, my new plan is to get up and hour earlier each day and go and do an hour run each day, with Saturday off!

More lost data

Amazing, more data looks like it has been ‘mislaid’ by the government…… when will it end?

They say confidential data MAY be on it, well…..is it or is it not???? How can they now know that???

A General Election will be our only chance eventually I suspect!!

With the rising status of weather warnings this weekend I was reminded of the work put in by the teams over the potential flood sin Great Yarmouth late last year, that was a superb example of all the agencies and emergency services working together with local authorities to provide a top class support service. I know they will be ready if we ever face another issue such as that, everyone learns form every experience and they will have taken much forward from that.

This week we are al still just about recovered form the Christmas high and then New Year celebrations followed by the stark reality of the returns to work. We have an exciting year ahead of us in GY with the outer Harbour progression, the casino project and the redevelopment of the whole area. Living in the villages we can also keep pressure on all areas to ensure we retain the wonderful and beautiful surroundings we enjoy.

I type this in the great knowledge that I will be running along our glorious beach tomorrow, come rain or shine, in preparation of the marathon this spring. Remember to wave if you see me ☺

US Primary & Work for Benefits

The US elections are underway. I know that the actual election is not until November this year, but with the way the US system works they are now basically in full flow and will be for the next 11 months.

A huge, frightening, amount of money will be spent and a very very complicated system will be used to decide who the final two challengers will be. The Democratic race seems a 2 horse one too many but there is always the dark horse and the Republican race seem fairly open at present and as a result may actually be a more interesting process to watch form here.

I have friends in the States who have always voted the same way, a fair number, but who now really are not sure. It all depends on who the 2 eventually are. A clear indication of how the US system does still differ from ours. I cannot deny that many of us will vote in an election (especially a General Election) for the person they want (such as David Cameron) but generally people tend to vote for a Party here. In the US it is far more personality based, at most levels in fact.

I will give my thoughts and views as the races develop Comments from you on your thoughts as matte ogress are welcome and it all starts tonight in the US with the big one of the early deciders in New Hampshire.

For BBC coverage of US Elections click here.

Work for Benefits:

I also note that Gordon Brown and Labour, who have overseen the lost data, ID cards fiasco and cost, the crash of northern Rock money and shares and a loss of nerve over a General Election now claims that he will do more for those out of work and he will do more to ensure those can work and should work, do work. Yet he likes to try and criticise ours. David Cameron has outlined a progressive policy to develop a better way forward; this will release more money in our economy for individuals and help the simplification of taxes eventually. It will also ensure that those who need help and support get it quicker. More details are on www.bbc.co.uk.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I fully support these fair and strong proposals, they will help many get their dignity back and everyone also get the help they need. Getting to work at any level is a step on the economic and social ladder for many. Whether it is a step towards a first car, a first home, supporting oneself or one’s family, it is an important step. We should do all we can to help people get onto the ladder and to ensure that ladder gives us more choice and dignity over what we can do with and in our own lives. An economy based on and overly reliant on government welfare support is never going to grow as large as one with a free and low tax economy with people having the chance to improve their own lives and that of their families.

End of Year thoughts 2007

I have just returned from a super run from Hemsby, down the beach to Winterton-on-Sea and back again. Running along the beach is great, not just in terms of exercise but also in the fresh air that you feel cleaning your system ☺

Good to get out again and start the build up to the Marathon this year, which I am still hoping to complete. I have also discovered a new love: skiing. My first ski trip ever recently and it was fantastic, extra fitness will help with that too. It was great to see my young son take to skiing so easily, he is also a keen cross country runner so I am starting to already realise he will overtake me very quickly. He is thinner, younger and faster then me…. Once he builds stamina with age I will stand no chance of keeping up. Fortunately he is only 7 so I have a bit of time yet!

Whilst running it gave me a chance to reflect on 2007 and thin forward to the excitement and opportunities of 2008. My own resolution will be to ensure I make more time for my family and to continue to work hard for my residents.

Running along the beach also gave me a very clear reminder of the costal erosion issue that affects us in Norfolk. We must do all we can to put pressure on the government to do more in this area. People will start loosing their homes in Scratby very soon if nothing is done. At the very least we need social responsibility on the part of government to re-house and compensate the people in these areas and that work to put pressure on must be kept up. I know the residents in the area are working hard with all agencies and authorities and are clearly passionate and committed to what they do. They need our support, form those of not with the direct vested interest but who do appreciate that this is an issue we need to deal with and move forward on.

I hope everyone has a great New Year and best wishes for 2008!

Government plans for our Schools

10 years in power and only now does the Government feel education needs an overhaul?!? Amazing!

I have spoken to a large number of teachers over the years who have continually said that we test too often, too young and don’t leave teachers enough time to teach.

There is, as in so much of our public services, so much paperwork and red tape that it prevents the professionals spending the time they would like actually delivering the front line service they are trained to.

It appears that the man who supposedly was part of the on/off election is behind the update. So did Labour fail since 1997 and do they accept that? Will they get it right this time? Is there nay evidence from the past to let us think they will succeed?

If millions are being spent on new playgrounds and other facilities that would on the surface seem a good thing.
What are they doing?

What an amazing period in politics.

We have had the Northern rock debacle, the on/off General election (it was not because of the polls, honest, he says), the lost data of half the country (but he says they can run an ID scheme), the cash for peerages scandal and now the dodgy donors scandal that seems to have no end. Everyday it seems like another person DID KNOW about he donations and we still have a government refusing to honour its election promise of a referendum on the European Treaty!

With all of this no tone senior member of government has stood up and had the courage to accept responsibility for the problems. To have the lost data and the Northern rock crisis and yet the Chancellor still be in their job is amazing. It is also arrogance and a lack of ability to take responsibility.

I suspect there is a hope that we will forget all of this in the next year or two before the General Election. In fact I for one think that now, more than ever is when there should be a national poll. Lets give the Country a chance to decide who should govern.

Politically Correct?

I have felt for some time that one of (ONE OF, not the only) the more important issues to be dealt with in our Country is immigration. The problem is that many of us have a fear of talking about it. Political correctness means that any politician who talks about immigration has a fear that they will be branded as extreme or racist.

This has meant that the ‘left’ has succeeded in making one of today’s big political issues a taboo subject. They have no answer to the problem so have begun to make it one that simply is not discussed and this is simply not acceptable or sensible.

Immigration is nothing to do with race; it is about proper processes to ensure people are dealt with humanely, properly and with respect. We should have a system that ensures those who need help get it, quickly and effectively when they come to the UK and those who should not be here or are detrimental to our society do not get to stay here illegally. We are a small country of limited resources and we must accept that and be prepared to deal with what that means in terms of use of resources and the amount of people that can be sustained.

All of this is why I was silo pleased to hear David Cameron’s speech a few weeks ago, it was grown up, logical and sympathetic to the problem and he was the first senior politician to face up to and talk publicly about hits issue. It was something of courage and to be applauded.

However, some will continue to ‘label’ any talk of immigration, but we must not be afraid to talk about it. We should be sensible and respectful in our de bates but we must have them and they are for the long term good of all involved.

I issued a press release this week (see press release section) on the figures involved in Norfolk over the last few years with immigration. It was interesting to note that almost immediately some were denigrating it and taking some coverage from ‘agencies’ saying the figures were wrong (if you want the full figures that the press had, email me. They were too long to post on the press release section of this site). The amusing thing about this is that the Home office provided the figures!!

Now, I do accept that the Government does not currently have a good track record of getting its numbers right, on anything let alone immigration numbers ☺.

Perhaps one day our government will acknowledge that political correctness does not prevent a grown up debate on the issues that face us today.

GREAT Yarmouth Police

I spent some time with a team from Great Yarmouth police. It was a quiet night and i am looking forward to going out with them in the summer to see a busy Saturday or Friday nigh tin comparison.

It is good that the area was so quiet with no real trouble. What was even more impressive was the team itself. the intelligence they gathered and worked with was excellent, the team work together and got on so well and their attitude to their job was amazing. They care about GY and they police in what i would refer to an old school way (and that is a big compliment).

It must be frustration for them to have to work with so much red tape and paperwork these days and they do, however they don't let it get them down. too many officers, good ones, are lost from uniform work due to the irritation of doing paperwork instead of the job they want to do, policing. If an officer makes an arrest it can take them out of action for up to 6 hours: madness!

The credit they deserve for the work they do to ensure we are safe is unlimited. Every night they potentially put their lives at risk. Arguably with too few officers in the force, too little money and a fantastic attitude. The attitude i refer to is the one that they have about doing the job. they want to ensure the town is safe, quiet and a pleasant place to work and live and that is a great credit to them. Crime rates in GY have fallen a lot in the last few years and that is thank to the work that these great servant sot society do.

We owe them all a great thanks. They certainly have mine and a huge amount of respect!

Scratby & Jeremy Hunt MP

Jeremy Hunt MP visited Great Yarmouth today. It was a superb opportunity to show him how much GY has move don in recent years and to explain how important the large Casino will be for the area and the regeneration projects. I know he left very impressed with what he saw and the work already done for regeneration and heritage work by the Council for the tourism trade.

We still have much to do in GY but the offer of things for people to enjoy matches and surpass that of any seaside resort in this Country.

I was delighted to join the Rotary Club in Great Yarmouth yesterday for their weekly lunch meeting. It is great to see a club of this type flourishing, it is a sure sign of a strong community that a group of this type can succeed with healthy membership and keep developing. I was amazed to hear about the sailing opportunities for those with disabilities in Waveney and the courage of those involved and taking part in it. I must ensure I make a visit there myself soon.

I will write further here in coming months about he coastal erosion issue but I must mention it now whilst writing this. I saw the difference over the last few days from the storm surge in the area around Scratby. It is worrying to se the erosion there in just a couple of years and I understand the very real concerns of the residents about how long their homes and safety can last.

At some stage we must force the Government to accept we have a real issue and sweeping it under the carpet will not suffice!

Remembrance Day & 10th Nov

Every year I work with a team who put on a school firework display which raises money for local charities. This year (last night) was a superb success.

It was great to see so many of the parents and teachers coming together voluntarily to put on an event to entertain the children and families of the school and to help raise some money for local charities. This year was brilliant. With almost 1000 people attending the food all sold out and it was excellent food this year and the fun and games ran form 3.30 to about 6.45. Everyone seemed to have fun and there was an amazing sense of community. Events like this show us what we can all do for our community spirit by working together.

Remembrance Sunday

Today is Remembrance Sunday 11.11. I will be attending a parade and taking my own moment to remember those who have fought so hard in different wars to ensure we remain free and British. We all owe an incalculable debt to those who have fought for out Country and today does just give us al that chance to publicly show that support and gratitude!

Floods

How do we even begin to imagine how it must have been for people evacuated from their homes to prepare for the potential flooding? Unless we have experienced it and the fear that can flow, we cannot.

Just watching the emergency services work was amazing and not just the formal services such as police and fire, who did a fantastic job but also our schools the staff in them who looked after people over night and through the morning as we had to watch and wait to see what would happen.

As it turned out it was not as bad as was feared for Great Yarmouth and many residents will be more than grateful for that. Yet that must not diminish the great way that a community and all within it from the Council, to residents and all the agencies came together to work for each other in a way that is wonderfully British.

Credit where it is due, it appears that al agencies had all that they needed. The government acted to ensure everyone was well informed and the Environment Agency had warnings out in good time to allow everyone to be ready.

A disaster avoided, but avoided in part due to the great community work done by all.

Queen's Speech

I am well on my way through the David Starkey history of the Monarchy, focusing on the Tudor age, which is fascinating. It is also interesting to consider how much of modern day politics has its roots and similarities to those times. Instead of Kings and would be Kings we have Labour and the team around the PM already looking like a team looking for the next man.

I saw the Queens speech and read the text today, wondering where the promised new vision for Britain was. A re-hash of many old ideas and ideals. Most worryingly there is still an insistence that we will not get the Referendum on the European Treaty we have been promised.

To loose so much to Europe and create such a different Europe as this treaty will do, we must have a right, the country voted in a government that promised a referendum and we should have one.

NO Election

Difficult to decide what to focus on for this Blog.

There is still the madness of the bin taxes, which I am sure the government will hope fades into a not being noticed.

The on-going madness of the government wanting to look deeper at unitary status for Norfolk and Norwich. Which will mean less local power and a huge change over cost to the taxpayer.

There is also the MET police boss Sir Ian Blair and the backing of him.

There are the football scores thus far this afternoon and my irritation at my Skybox giving up half way through the first half of a game today.

The farce of the new housing scheme that only ahs 88 people taking it up and so many more stories that I have now almost filled my Blog entry without really getting into any one of them or even touching on most of them.

At any other time we would be calling for a change of government, however our Prime Minister, who has relied on a reputation for being touch and decisive. Decided not to have an election, at first he did (we are led to believe) want one, then he didn’t and in the end he decided not to as he wanted the country to find out more about what his government could offer. Putting aside that is what a General election is for, he himself has been Chancellor for 10 years, I think we all know him fairly well by now.

Or do we?

After all, it was always hard to find a sight of him in the press when tough issues and scandals had to be dealt with. Perhaps he never decided even then which way he wanted to go?

So our current experience is standard practice, election is off, then on, then off and finally off. Otherwise many candidates, like me, could have been MP’s as of today and we could have found ourselves with the chance to move forward and see more local control being brought in by our new Conservative Government. We will have to wait now, at least until 1009, possibly 2010, if Gordon can make his mind up by then.

Until then, we will have to work to get the Referendum we were promise din his manifesto of 2005 and continue to work to deliver locally. Luckily in GY we already have local Conservative control.

We have Cllrs who work d hard for their community and we will continue to work together to represent that Community within GY and outside of it as well.

On that note our Gapton Hall petition is still going strong, if you have not already: please sign up!

I believe that we pay council tax to have our local authority do a range of things, many residents say to me that they like the regeneration (inc Outer Harbour) that the Council has enabled and all of the extra work they do and yet the 2 core expectations of our Council Tax are clean streets and our rubbish to be collected. So if the government now wants to tax us for our rubbish in yet another stealth tax, we start to wonder what Council tax is for! If we want more recycling we should encourage and educate our residents to do more, not penalize via more tax!!! This in itself could just lead to more fly tipping as well.

Who knows we have had indecision on a general election, on the euro treaty, on the funding for schools (payment shave to be given back and then they don’t) and now this. Last week the PM stopped this and now the bin tax is trying to be launched via the back door of a different Bill. It is still a stealth tax on rubbish and that simply is not the answer to increasing recycling.

European Treaty & Nelson Ward lunch

The Nelson Ward lunch today was excellent. It is always good to see so many friends and residents turn out to support one of the events that Joy Cosatis puts on. She works very hard and always has for her community and is a testament to how much someone of 86 can contribute to the community and the lives of all who know them. She is a great lady.

Geoffrey Van Orden MEP joined us for the lunch as well and spoke about the issues affecting us form Europe at present. It is interesting that the PM decided not to hold a General Election, once he knew the polls were not in his favour and now is refusing a referendum on the Treaty, as I suspect he knows he would loose that too. A trend is forming….

Geoffrey took us through the issue in the Treaty that mark it out as a clear replication, with little deviation, form the original constitution. In fact, as he rightly pointed out, most leaders (almost all except ours) have acknowledged it is basically that same document, even a cross party committee has agreed that the ‘red lines’ are almost unworkable and yet the PM refuses the referendum that was promise din the 2005 Labour manifesto.

We will campaign on the need for a referendum and I fully support that and the work the Geoffrey Van Orden MEP is putting into that with his colleagues and the rest of the Conservative Party.

Winterton-on-Sea

A great, if simple day today. With the family we had quiet day, with a few hours spent at Winterton-on-Sea beach. A fabulous place, with tons of space for the kids to run and play and a super cafe, go visit.

I am going to the Nelson Ward lunch tomorrow in Great Yarmouth town and looking forward to what is a superb lunch. Joy, who organises it, ran a really good event last year and this year we are joined by Geoffrey Van Orden MEP who is one of the hardest working politicians i have ever met.

I will post more on that after the event.

European Treaty

Sorry for the delay since my last posting. I have been away on vacation. 2 weeks in Disney-World with the family, it was really good and yet it was like boot camp. A vast place where you get up at about 6am (2 young kids with huge excitement) and hit the parks by 8am to walk all day and then after a short break take them to an evening event too. Best marathon training i could ask for!

While i have been away the Lib Dems lost a leader, very careless!

The resignation letter was so brief that for me, that said everything of his feelings.

We still have our Prime Minister and the Government avoiding their election manifesto promise of a referendum on the new European Constitution/treaty.

We were promised one, we should have one. Pretty much everyone in the world , outside of our government, has admitted the treaty is the same as the old Constitution and yet they refuse to honour a promise. A clear cut breach of a election pledge.

No doubt we will have more of this in the coming weeks as this debate moves forward.

Coastline

Coastal protection is a key issue for residents in and around the Great Yarmouth constituency. there are real and reasonable concerns at the plans that should protect some of our residents homes in the years ahead.

I know that the Council are working hard to get the appropriate scheme agreed and i fully understand and support the residents who are determined to get the right package for themselves and the future generations of residents in areas that are and could be affected. The strength of feeling on this is well shown by the number of people attending the various public meetings across the Parishes.

It is an expensive project and one that the Government should be funding, as we are talking about the future of the lives and homes of residents and the physical land in our country being at potential risk.

There is, with current climate changes a risk to much of the coastline in our country. It may be easy to say that the government cannot protect it all, it may well also be easy to say that local authorities should work out plans and manage the situation. however, in situation like this were our land and homes are at real risk i believe this is exactly the sort of ting that our Government and MP;’s should be working on. it is what they should be fighting for, on our behalf an their experts (Government has a bigger call on the best experts in theory) should be working on plans to protect areas such as the Great Yarmouth (and surrounding) coastline.

After all, if our government is not here to protect us and work for us, what is it here for?
